PE1855 Best Practise

 Dear All,

I'm new to blade server & we will be setting up a PE1855 wth 4 server modules & 2 X PC5316M. Anyone have stuff like "Best Practise" or "step by step guide" on how I should go about to set it up properly? Thanks in advance.

Blades are just like any other servers, they are just more space efficient and you have to use a USB floppy and CD or PXE to install an OS.

I'm not exactly sure what you are looking for when you say 'best practice'.

A few things that are generic for any serverwould be:
- rack it properly
- use a 2 different powersources (2 UPSes or 1 UPS and 1 PDU)
- keep the serverroom cool (put the airconditioning on a UPS too (I've seen where a poweroutage occured and the UPS(es) would keep the servers running, but the AC went out and the temperature in the serverroom went up fast and caused failures on the equipment))
- use raid (1; only redundant raid option with the 1855 as it only supports 2 drives)

Hi Dev Mgr,

Thanks for your reply. There are quite a number of devices in the PE1855. I don't know which one I should setup first. Eg. KVM, DRAC/M, BMC, PC5316 switch, etc. I'm also wondering how the PC5316 switch work since it have 10 internal & only 6 external ports.

The best practice would be to connect to the DRAC module first using a null modem (serial) cable and give the DRAC an IP address - you should see this in the user documentation.

Then once the DRAC has its IP address and user settings, you should connect via the DRAC to the 5316M ethernet module (logged into DRAC via hyperterminal - use the command connect switch-1 and connect switch-2 for both modules - switch-1 will be on the top right slot and switch-2 will be top left)

Create a VLAN1 and an IP address in the 5316M.

Once both IP addresses are assigned, you should be able to connect to both devices via a web gui and their respective IP addresses - much more user friendly with this option unless you like CLI.

Configuration of the 5316M would need to be planned depending on your whole network, if you only have one network it should be straightforward enough, you can trunk/lag all the ports leaving the 5316M into 1 connection

You should leave the DRAC connected to your network at all times

Hi Techhcet,

Thanks for the info, that's something I need. Hope I have no problem with it when I receive my PE1855.
